Last year, Grandma Susan came to our house and got all four of my kids excited about going out in our yard to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. If you have never heard of it, you should check it out. My kids are all fairly young (4,6,8,10), so I was curious how Grandma Susan was going to help them figure out the kind of bird they were seeing so they could be accurately counted. Grandma Susan arrived at the house with lots of books and brochures and checklists for each child. Then, for one hour, the kids, Grandma Susan and I walked around the yard keeping tally of the birds that were seen. We found it worked best when the kids worked in pairs--that way they were able to find pictures that matched the birds they saw faster. Everyone had a really good time and the kids actually learned the names for several of the birds they see in our yard on almost a daily basis.
Well, the backyard bird count is currently under way this year and the kids are excited to count birds again. If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity you can do at home, check it out!
